Image Types

Raster Images |  Vector Images | Compound Format

Raster Images : These types of images are composed of pixels and are dependant on resolution for clarity. Raster images use many colored pixels or individual building blocks to form a complete image. JPEGs, GIFs and PNGs are common raster image types. Raster imaged cannot be resized without compromising with the quality of the picture because they are made of fixed number of colored pixels.

Vector Images : These types are images are not dependant on resolution and can be enlarged without distortion. Vector images are constructed using mathematical formulas rather than individual colored blocks, vector file types such as EPS, AI and cdr are excellent for creating graphics that frequently require resizing.

Compound Format : These are formats containing both pixel and vector data, possible other data, e.g. the interactive features of PDF.
